SAINT PAUL THE FIRST HERMIT |

Saint Paul traditionally was the first Christian hermit. He was a Christian from Upper Egypt. Under the persecution by Decius in 250, and family feud he left the world and went to live in the desert. He found a cave near the Red Sea, and lived there in peaceful solitude. For 90 years he did not see anybody except a palm tree, and a raven used to bring him half of a loaf of bread every day.
The Holy Spirit revealed his presence in the deep desert to Saint Anthony. He set off to find him. After too much walking, he was guided by the Spirit to a light leading to the cave. He met with Paul who knew that God had sent Anthony to help him die. They became friends immediately. Describing the meeting, the biography said: “Blessed Paul said to Anthony: “For a long time now, I have known that you dwelled in these regions. And for a long time God had promised you to me for a companion. Since my hour of eternal sleep has arrived, and because I have always desired to be dissolved and to be with Christ…. You have been sent by God to bury my miserable body, rather to return earth to earth”. “. I beg of you, hasten, if is not too much to ask, and bring back the cloak which Athanasius the bishop gave you, to wrap about my wretched body”. St. Anthony believed it was only by revelation that Paul could know of this cloak. It was a gift from Athanasius.
St. Anthony left to get the cloak. When he returned he found the body of St. Paul, kneeling with stretched arms, but dead. As he was wrapping him in the cloak, he wondered how he could dig a grave without available tools. Suddenly two lions appeared, and dug a hole in the sand long enough for the blessed Paul. Mourning his death, St. Anthony kept Paul’s outer garment, which was woven by palm leaves, that he treasured, and wore it on feast days.
Today, in the same spot of the cave, near the Red Sea there is a monastery bears his name (Anba Paula).
INSPIRATIONAL EVENT: Paul asked St. Anthony for the news of the world. While they caught up on such news, the raven arrived with a whole loaf of bread for their meal. For the raven used to bring him only a half, enough to sustain him during his many years in the desert!
“Woe to me a sinner, who falsely bear the name of monk! …I have seen Paul in Paradise!” ( St. Anthony. )
ST. PAUL the first Hermit
+ St. Paul was born to a wealthy family in Alexandria in 228 AD.
+ After his father death, St. Paul and his brother disagreed over their
shares in the inheritance.
+ St. Paul left every thing to his brother after watching the funeral
procession of a wealthy man and retreated to an empty tomb outside of
Alexandria.
+ He fasted and prayed for 3 days for guidance from God. An Angel appeared
and let him to the eastern desert.
+ St. Paul left alone with God in a mountain cave near the Red Sea for 90
years.
+ Near the cave, St. Paul found a spring. He ate dates from the palm trees.
And every day a raven brought him half a loaf of bread. St. Paul clothed himself
in a garment of woven palm leaves.
+ When God wanted to reveal the holiness of St. Paul, He sent him St.
Anthony. When they met, the raven appeared with a whole loaf of bread.
+ St. Paul asked St. Anthony to bring him the liturgical vestment of Pope
Athanasius the Apostolic.
+ On his way back, St. Anthony saw a throng of singing Angels lifting the
spirit of St. Paul up to heaven in the year 343 AD.
+ When St. Anthony returned to the cave he found St. Paul dead kneeling in
prayer.
+ Two loins approached the cave, St. Anthony instructed them to dig a grave
for the body of St. Paul.
+ St. Anthony burled the body of St. Paul using the Papal vestment as a
coffin. He took the palm leaf garment of the saint and gave it to Pope
Athanasius, Who wore it on feast days. Many miracles were attributed to the
garment of St. Paul.
The only saying we Know of St. Paul the first Hermit is:-
“Who escapes from hard times, escapes from God”
May the blessing of St. Paul be with all of us, Amen.

بعناية إلهية التقى القديس أنبا انطونيوس أب الأسرة الرهبانية ومؤسسها في العالم برئيس المتوحدين الذي سبقه بسنوات طويلة في حياة رهبانية خفية وسط البرية لا يعلم عنه أحد سوى اللَّه الذي كان يعوله بغرابٍ يقدم له نصف خبزة يوميًا لعشرات السنين؛ يشتّم اللَّه صلواته وتسابيحه رائحة سرور، فدعاه: "حبيبي بولا".
ولد في مدينة الإسكندرية حوالي سنة 228م. ولما توفي والده ترك له ولأخيه الأكبر بطرس ثروة طائلة، فأراد بطرس أن يغتصب النصيب الأكبر من الميراث. إذ اشتد بينهما الجدل أراد القديس أنبا بولا أن يتوجه إلى القضاء. في الطريق رأى جنازة لأحد عظماء المدينة الأغنياء، فسأل نفسه إن كان هذا الغني قد أخذ معه شيئًا من أمور هذا العالم، فاستتفه هذه الحياة الزمنية والتهب قلبه بالميراث الأبدي، لذا عوض انطلاقه إلى القضاء خرج من المدينة، ودخل في قبر مهجور يقضي ثلاثة أيام بلياليها طالبًا الإرشاد الإلهي.
ظهر له ملاك يرشده إلى البرية الشرقية، حيث أقام بجبل نمرة القريب من ساحل البحر الأحمر. عاش أكثر من 80 سنة لم يشاهد فيها وجه إنسانٍ، وكان ثوبه من ليف وسعف النخل، وكان الرب يعوله ويرسل له غرابًا بنصف خبزة كل يوم، كما كان يقتات من ثمار النخيل والأعشاب الجبلية أحيانًا، ويرتوي من عين ماء هناك.
ظن القديس أنبا انطونيوس أنه أول من سكن البراري، فأرشده ملاك الرب بأن في البرية إنسانًا لا يستحق العالم وطأة قدميه؛ من أجل صلواته يرفع اللَّه عن العالم الجفاف ويهبه مطرًا.
إذ سمع القديس هذا الحديث السماوي انطلق بإرشاد اللَّه نحو مغارة القديس أنبا بولا حيث التقيا معًا، وقد ناداه أنبا بولا باسمه، وصارا يتحدثان بعظائم اللَّه. وعند الغروب جاء الغراب يحمل خبزة كاملة، فقال الأنبا بولا: "الآن علمت أنك رجل اللَّه حيث لي أكثر من 80 عامًا يأتيني الغراب بنصف خبزة، أما الآن فقد أتى بخبزة كاملة، وهكذا فقد أرسل اللَّه لك طعامك أيضًا."
في نهاية الحديث طلب الأنبا بولا من الأنبا انطونيوس أن يسرع ويحضر الحلة الكهنوتية التي للبطريرك البابا أثناسيوس لأن وقت انحلاله قد قرب. رجع القديس أنبا انطونيوس وهو متأثر للغاية، وإذ أحضر الحلة وعاد متجهًا نحو مغارة الأنبا بولا رأى في الطريق جماعة من الملائكة تحمل روح القديس متجهة بها نحو الفردوس وهم يسبحون ويرتلون بفرحٍ.
بلغ الأنبا أنطونيوس المغارة فوجد الأنبا بولا جاثيًا على ركبتيه، وإذ ظن أنه يصلي انتظر طويلاً ثم اقترب منه فوجده قد تنيح، وكان ذلك في الثاني من أمشير (سنة 343م). بكاه متأثرًا جدًا، وإذ صار يفكر كيف يدفنه أبصر أسدين قد جاءا نحوه، فأشار إليهما نحو الموضع المطلوب فحفرا حفرة ومضيا، ثم دفنه وهو يصلي.
حمل الأنبا انطونيوس ثوب الليف الذي كان يلبسه القديس وقدمه للأنبا أثناسيوس الذي فرح به جدًا، وكان يلبسه في أعياد الميلاد والغطاس والقيامة، وقد حدثت عجائب من هذا الثوب.
تحّول الموضع الذي يعيش فيه القديس إلى دير يسكنه ملائكة أرضيون يكرسون كل حياتهم لحياة التسبيح المفرحة بالرب.
