SAINT ANSELM |
![]() |
ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY
DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH
(1033-1109)
St. Anselm was born at Aosta and raised in Burgundy, France. Because of his father’s harshness, that forbade him from entering a local abbey, Anselm wandered few years in Europe before moving to Normandy. He was attracted by the reputation of Lanfranc, the abbot of Bec monastery in Normandy, and settled there as a monk in 1060. He started his life of prayers, study, and meditation for ten years, before writing his famous works: the monologue, and the pros logion. In the latter he proved the existence of God, which revealed St. Anselm’ originality. He argued that God is “ that which nothing greater can be thought.” Anselm also believed deeply in the relationship between faith and reason, ‘I believe in order to understand’.
When Lanfranc became archbishop of Canterbury, Anselm was elected, replacing him as a prior, but stayed under his guidance. After his death, Anselm was the choice of the clergy to succeed him. It took four years to get King William II to approve the appointment. Against his desire, Anselm was appointed archbishop of Canterbury, a job that got him exiled two times, and in continuous tension with king Williams, and his successor king Henry. He enjoyed Theology more than ecclesiastical duties, although he accomplished a lot such as supporting the strict enforcement of clerical celibacy. So many times, he begged the Pope to relieve him from Canterbury, but the pope was in need of his theological mind as said. In fact Anselm’s place in history is known as the “father of scholasticism”.
After his second exile in 1106, Anselm returned to England for short period, reaching reconciliation, half way, with King Henry, who demanded homage from the bishops. While in exile, he wrote his masterpiece “Why did God become man”, which influenced Theology from the Middle Ages on. Then, he died in 1109. In 1734, he was named a Doctor of the Church.
From his writings:
“ My soul, have you found what you are looking for? You were looking for God, and you have discovered that He is the Supreme Being, and that you could not possibly imagine anything more perfect. You have discovered that this Supreme Being is life itself, light, wisdom, goodness, eternal blessedness, and blessed eternity”. -
Anselm"My heart has said of you, "Seek his face". O Lord, I do seek your face" (Ps 26,8)
Lord, how long will it be? (Ps 6,4). How long, Lord, will you forget us? How
long will you hide your face from us? (Ps 12,2). When will you look upon us and
hear us? When will you enlighten our eyes and show us your face? When will you
come back to us? Look upon us, Lord, hear us and enlighten us, show us your very
self. Return us the good of your presence amongst us, whose life is so weary
without you. Take pity on our efforts and our striving toward you, for we may do
nothing without you. Since you invite us, therefore help us.
I beg you, O Lord, do not leave me sighing of desperation; but rather let me
breathe hope…May I at least be allowed to catch a glimpse of the light, even
from faraway, even from the depths of hell. Teach me to seek you, and when I
seek you show yourself to me, for I cannot seek you unless you guide me, nor may
I find you unless you show yourself to me. I will seek you in desiring you and
desire you in seeking you, find you in loving you and love you in finding you.
Proslogion, 1
Saint Anselm (1033-1109), Monk,
Bishop, Doctor of the Church
Proslogion 25-26
The resurrection: life in full
Why do you stray so far in search of good things for your soul and your body?
Love the one and only Good in whom are all good things. That is enough… There
on high, all that anyone can love and desire is to be found.
Do you love beauty? “The saints will shine like the sun.” (Mt 13:43) Do you
love the agility or the strength of a free body from which all obstacles have
been removed? “They shall be like the angels of God”… Or a long and healthy
life? There on high, eternal good health awaits you, for “the just live
forever.” (Wis 5:15)… Do you want to be satiated? You shall be when God shows
you his face in his glory (Ps 17:15). To be made drunk? “They have their fill
of the prime gifts of your house.” (Ps 36:9) Or do you love a melodious song?
There on high, the choirs of angels sing God’s praise without end. Are you
seeking very pure delights? God will give you to drink from his delightful
streams (Ps 36:9). Do you love wisdom? God’s wisdom will become manifest in
person. Friendship? They shall love God more than themselves, they shall love
one another as much as themselves, and God will love them more than they can
ever love… Do you love harmony? They will all have one single will, for they
will have no will other than God’s… Honors and wealth? God will set his good
and faithful servants over many goods (Mt 25:21); even more, “they shall be
called sons of God,” (Mt 5:9) and they shall really be that, for where the Son
of God is, there also shall be the “heirs of God, heirs with Christ.” (Rom
8:17)
