"For to us there is but One  God, the Father, of Whom are all things, and One Lord Jesus Christ, by Whom are all things; and One Holy  Spirit, in Whom are all things; yet these words, of, by , in , whom, do not denote a difference of nature (for if this were the case, the three propositions, or the order of the three names would never be altered), but they characterize the personalities of a nature which is one and unconfused. Before delving in the history of Islam, let us prepare the setting by answering the allegations of the Muslim Fundamentalists against the Holy Bible, and the Prophesy Concerning Muhammad.

The Infallibility of the Bible

THE HOLY BIBLE FREE FROM SLANT AND DISTORTION

Muslim fundamentalists claim that the Torah and the Bible were slanted and distorted, and the original or main copy or correct copy is somewhere in a known Museum, maybe England! So they say!

This is false allegation that is without proof: for if it was so, then the Qur'an also is in a state that could be slanted and/or distorted.   It is a false, obscure, and helpless allegation, as it is unable to tell us:

  1. When did the distortion happened?

  2. Where it happened?. In which country this crime took place?

  3. Where in the Bible?. Who did it?

  4. How and why it happened? What the perpetrators would gain?

  5. And where the original copy is?      

PROOF & DISCUSSION

The Torah was in the hands of the Jews. Would it be possible to say that they altered their own book?  This is impossible for the following reasons:

  1. The Jews venerated the Scriptures, and assigned certain groups of people, such as the scribes to serve and move it. They did their utmost to preserve, protect, and defend it. It is written in their books and in their traditions: God revealed the Torah to Moses on Mount Sinai. Moses entrusted it to Joshua who gave it to the Judges and the elders of Israel who in turn handed it over to the prophets. The prophets gave it to the Sanhedrin ( the great Jewish Council ) for the sake of protection and teachings of the people. The Council enacted 3 commandments : a- Beware of Judging. b- Teach many ... c- Be a strong safeguard to the Torah.

  2. They had strict rules imposed on the scribes. The laws literally said: "Before writing a single word of God's words, you should wash your body, put on your Hebrew clothes, and get ready with humble thoughts. The parchment to be written on, should be the skin of clean animals, and the ink should be pure and black (a mixture of charcoal carbon and honey). 

  3. If it had ever occurred to the Jews to alter their Scriptures, they would have eliminated the parts that condemn their prophets, for instance; the part about Abraham begetting Ishmael from his Egyptian slave Hager, or David's adultery and killing, and the corruption of Solomon, etc.

  4. Despite the Jews denial of the coming of Christ, and their enmity to Him, they could not eliminate one letter of what was inscribed.

  5. The Lord Jesus Christ, glory be to His name, attested to the Torah and the Old Testament with all their parts and sections, starting from the Law of Moses, to the books of the prophets, the Psalms and all the Scriptures ( Luke 24:44 ).

WHEN DID THE DISTORTION TAKE PLACE? WAS IT BEFORE OR AFTER CHRIST?

If Muslims said that it took place before Christ, we would say that Christ quoted the Old Testament and supported it, and so did His Apostles, for He said to the Jews: = "Search the Scriptures" (John 5:39). = Moses wrote about me" (John 5:46). = "Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day" (John 8:56). = "David calls Me Lord" (Matt 22:42; Ps 110).         So, how could He prove His teaching, quote from the books if it is distorted?!

If they claim that the alteration took place after Christ, from that time until now, we would answer that the Scriptures were available to the Christians as they were to the Jews. Any distortion could immediately be proven and made known. If Muslims dare to think that the Jews and Christians agree and conspire to alter and distort the Scriptures, is preposterous to think so. No reasonable person would say that, for the Jews and Christians are adversaries.

WHERE IS THE ORIGINAL COPY THAT DOES NOT CONTAIN THE ALLEGED ALTERATIONS'?

Up till now there has not been found any copy of the Torah that is different from the copies that are in our hands and which are kept in the museums of the whole world. The Old Testament has been translated into hundreds of languages, and all of them are congruous. Even Islam, defends the validity of the Scriptures as it states in many verses in different Suras-chapters: 

  1. + 'We have, without doubt, sent down the message; and We will assuredly guard it' ( Sura  XV:Al-Hijr ).                     

  2. + 'No change can there be in the Words of God'.( Sura X: Yunis (Jonah). 

  3. + 'We believe in God. and the revelation given to us, and to Abraham, Isma'il, Isaac, Jacob,, and the Tribes, and that given to Moses and Jesus, and that given to (all) Prophets from their Lord: We make no difference between one and another of them' ( Sura II: Al-Baqara, ( The Heifer-Cow ).

  4. + 'If you are in doubt as to what we have revealed unto you, then ask those who have been reading the Book from before you' (Sura II: Al-Baqara, ( The Cow ).

  5. + 'To you We sent the Scripture in truth, confirming the Scripture that came before it, and guarding it in safety' (Sura V: Al-Ma'ida ( The Food ).

  6. + 'And he sent down the Law (Moses) and the Gospel (of Jesus) before this, as a guide to mankind' ( Sura III: The Family of Imran ).        

QUESTIONS RAISED: + How would God refer the Muslims to the upholders of a distorted Bible, to ask them to get doubt removed from their hearts?  + How would the Qur'an come down to watch over or be guardian of a distorted book?   + How could God be accused of inability to keep His promise to protect it?

ISLAM'S TESTIMONY TO THE SOUNDNESS OF THE BIBLE, ITS INSPIRATION AND ITS PRESERVATION:

  1. + 'Let the people of the Gospel judge by what God has revealed therein'   ( Sura The Food:47 ).

  2. + 'Then in their wake, we followed them up with (others of) our apostles: We sent after them Jesus the Son of Mary, and bestowed upon him the Gospel' ( Sura Iron:27).

  3. + 'And He sent down the Law (Moses) and the Gospel (of Jesus) before this, as a guide to mankind' (Sura The Family of Imran:3).

The Qur'an described the Gospel, saying: 'The bright book which contains teachings, light and preaching to the pious; It has guidance and mercy'. One would rightly question here:

DID THE TORAH & THE BIBLE PROPHESY CONCERNING MOHAMMAD ?

Why Christians and Jews don't believe in Mohammad, when the Bible      ( Allegedly ) predict his coming?

* Some Muslims cite many references in both Old and New Testaments to prove that Mohammad was prophesied in the Bible, claiming that it have been 'changed' or 'deviated'; 'misconstrued' or 'distorted'.

* However, a close examination of these references shows that they don't fit Mohammad. In the New Testament, the Gospel of St. John chapters 14 & 15 that describe the Holy Spirit, which the Lord Jesus Christ promised His Disciples to send in His Name, is used by the Muslims as one of their strong proofs.

The first allegation:

  1. "And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may be abide with you forever.. for He dwells with you, and shall be in you." ( John 14:16,17 ).

  2. "even the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it sees Him not, neither knows Him" ( John 14:17 )

  3. "But the Comforter, who is the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." (John 14:26).

  4. "But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of Truth who proceeds from the Father, He shall testify of Me" (John 15:26).

  5. "It is good for you that I go away, for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send Him unto you. And when He is come, He will convict the world of sin, because they believe not in Me; and of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see me no more; and of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged" (John 16:7-11).

  6. "However when He, the Spirit of Truth is come, He will guide you into all truth; for He shall not speak for Himself, but whatsoever He shall hear... and He shall glorify Me, for He shall receive of Mine, and shall show it unto you" (John 16:13,14).

  7. "And being assembled together with them, He (Jesus) commanded them (Disciples) not to depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, He said: 'you have heard from Me: for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit ( Comforter ) not many days from now" (Acts 1:4,5)

These verses are written in the Gospel of John concerning the Holy Spirit  ( The Comforter ), which the Lord promised His Disciples with, after His Ascension into Heavens.  The Muslims claim that these verses pointed or referred to Mohammad, for the word "PARAKLETOS" in Greek means "Ahmad" or "Mahmoud".  ANSWER:  In the Greek language there is another word written and pronounced as "PERIKLEETOS", and it means "Mahmoud, or Mashhoor=Famous". But the word that was mentioned in the Gospel of John chapters 14,15,&16 is written and pronounced in Greek "PARAKLEETOS" = COMFORTER.

Now let us  do little exercise, by replacing  'The Comforter'  by 'Mohammad' to see if there is any deviation, as the Muslims claim and see if it makes any sense (from 1 to 7):

  1. Was there a first Muhammad to give another Muhammad? Of course not. Did Muhammad abide with us forever, dwell with us"?

  2. Was Muhammad a Spirit? Of course not. He was a man and died.

  3. Was Muhammad "the Holy Spirit? He himself claimed that he was but a servant. Was he sent in the name of Jesus? Of course not. Did he teach and bring all things that Jesus said? Of course not.

  4. Did you accept, as Muslims, that M. is sent by Christ?? Did he proceed from the Father or was he the son of Abdullah" Did Muhammad testify of Jesus Christ? (Please see 1234) above!!

  5. Again, did Jesus (Isa Ibn-Mariam) send Muhammad? Will the Muslims accept that ? Did M. convict the world of not believing in Jesus? Muhammad made Him just a messenger or prophet like the rest. Muhammad rebuked people who said that Christ is God, and that He saved us from the bondage of Satan,

  6. Did M. receive Jesus, Glorify him and showed him to the World?

  7. If Muhammad was the Holy Spirit, why did he come late 6 centuries, although Jesus told His Disciples; "not many days from now"!? Did we baptize in the name of Mohammad? Does Islam have baptism? Muhammad was flesh. The world would not see the Holy Spirit, but people saw Muhammad. The Qur'an never mentioned that the Holy Spirit was Muhammad.

Disproving the 2nd & 3rd allegations:

THE BOOK OF GENESIS CHAPTER 49:10 : "The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh comes; and to Him shall be the obedience of the people" (Gen 49:10)

Muslims thought that "Judah" is a prophesy about Muhammad, for the word is derived from a Hebrew verb which translated into Arabic as 'Ahmad', and since Muhammad is derived from this verb, therefore this verse concerns Muhammad.

We cannot deny that the word 'Judah' is 'Ahmad' =praise, not Muhammad because Leah Jacob's wife, called her son so, said: "Now I will praise the Lord. Therefore she called his name Judah". (Gen 29:35). Also, his father Jacob said: "Judah, you are he whom your brothers shall praise." (49:8). Let us replace Judah by Muhammad in the verse 49:10, and see: "The scepter shall not depart from Muhammad, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, UNTIL SHILOH COMES". This means that the scepter, referring to the kingdom, power and the law shall depart from Muhammad once a person named 'Shiloh' appears or comes, 'and to him shall be the obedience of the people'. This prophesy does not concern the coming of Judah but a person who comes from Judah called Shiloh, after the kingdom and power departs this tribe. The word Judah is a name of one of the 12 sons of Jacob. If you ask the Jews about the meaning of  "Shiloh", they will tell you that it is among the titles of the awaited Lord Jesus Christ.

The 3rd alleged proof: Muslims claim that the prophesy in Deuteronomy 18:15-19, is about Muhammad: "God told Moses, 'I will raise up a prophet from among their brethren like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. And it will come about that whoever will not listen to my words which he shall speak in My name, I Myself will require it of him".

Muslims claim that Ishmael is the brother of Isaac, the grandfather of Israel, therefore the promised prophet is Muhammad! The Israelites never considered any one outside their 12 tribes as 'brothers' to them. Brothers, has specific definition to the Israelites in Dt 15:12; "If your brother a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, is sold to you and serves you six years, then in the seventh year you shall let him go free from you." Another specification is outlined in 17:14-16 it says; "When you come to the land which the Lord God is giving you, ...you shall set a king over you whom the Lord you God chooses; ONE  FROM  AMONG  YOUR BRETHREN you shall set as king over you; you may not set a foreigner over you, who is not your brother." Why foreigners? The book cautioned, because they worshiped idols, and led an evil life. Further more it was never documented that Israel ever put a descendant of Ishmael or Esau over them (to consider the two as brothers to Muslims).

Disproving the 4th & 5th allegations:

"The Lord came from Sinai, and dawned on them from Seir; He shone forth from Mount Paran, and He came with myriads of holy ones; from His right hand came a fiery law for them." Deuteronomy 33:2

Muslims claim that: + the coming of the Lord from Sinai, gave Moses the Torah.                       + While 'dawning from Seir' gave Isa Ibn - Mariam the Gospel.               + As for the 'shining from Mount Paran' that is giving the Qur'an to Muhammad, for Paran is one of Mecca's mountains.

Answer: The Torah never mentioned that Mount Paran is in Mecca or even close to it. On the contrary, Mount Paran is bordering the northern Sinai desert as mentioned in Genesis 14:6 "as far as El Paran which is by the wilderness." Genesis 21:21 says about Ishmael: "He dwelt in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt." In Numbers 10:12 "And the Israelites set out from the wilderness of Sinai and traveled.. until the cloud came to rest in the Desert of Paran."  Never did the Torah mentioned that the Israelites ever journeyed to Mecca after leaving Egypt. From a map, we know that Sinai, Seir and Paran, are three neighboring mountains in the Peninsula of Sinai, which is far, far away from Mecca!!  Then the verse refers to the special and specific blessing from, Jacob, to every tribe of Israel

Disproving the 5th allegation: Concerning Psalm 45:3:

"Gird your sword upon your thigh, O Mighty One, with Your glory and Majesty".  Muslims claim that this is a clear prophesy about Muhammad, for he came with the sword, fought many wars, and was fond of killing.

And the answer is: The world history is filled with wars, fighters, killers and killing since the fall of Adam & Eve. The first one to be killed was Abel by his brother Cain. St. James says in his Epistle: "Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? You lust and do not have. You murder and covet ad cannot obtain..."( James 4:1-3 )  So war is man's nature, and sometimes habits to fulfill his lusts and desires.

+ The person in the verse of the psalm is not a man of war who kills and     commit murder, but it refers to the "glory and majesty".                            + The truth is not brought forth by screaming, crying and killing in wars. We see the Gospel witnesses for Christ, who brought truth; "But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew from there; and great multitudes followed Him, and He healed them all. And He warned them not to make Him known; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: 'Behold, My Servant whom I have chosen.... I will put My Spirit upon Him,...He will not quarrel nor cry out, nor will anyone hear His voice in the streets. A bruised reed He will not break, and smoking flax He will not quench, till He sends forth justice to victory, and His Name gentiles will trust". ( Matt 12:15-21 )

+ Now, was Muhammad called 'Lord'?                                                            No, he called himself a slave and messenger.                                               + Did the Muslims one day spoke of M. and called him by the prophesy in Psalm saying: "Your throne O God, is forever and ever?" ( Ps 5:6 )             + Was Muhammad ever called a Christ?                                                        + Was he appointed king? (Ps 45:7) Who anointed him?                               + Was he a Spirit? as in Revelation ?  (Rev 2:7 ) . He was a human who lived and died and was buried, but never rose from dead

Subject: مكانة الكتاب المقدس واستحالة تحريفه

كيف يمكن تحريف الإنجيل ؟!
لقد كانت عادة المسيحيين عند دفن موتاهم. إنهم يضعون نسخة من الكتاب المقدس تحت رأس المتوفى. وقد وجدوا فى حفريات نجع حمادى فى مصر فتاة قبطية وتحت رأسها نسخة من سفر المزامير بأكمله باللغة القبطية من القرون الأولى للمسيحية.. كيف يستطيع أحد بعد ذلك أن يجمع كل هذه النسخ المنتشرة فى أنحاء العالم ليحرّف فيها؟!
كما أنه يوجد أحيـاناً بين الكنائس بعـض الخلافات، فكـيف يمكن أن تتفق الكنائس على التـحريف؟! وهذه الخــلافات موجودة منذ القرون الأولى للمسيحية.
إلى جانب وجود بعض الهراطقة الذين جادلوا ضد القديسين. مثل الحوار الذى بين القديس أثناسيوس الرسولى وبين أريوس فى أوائل القرن الرابع الميلادى. فأريوس كان ينكر ألوهية السيد المسيح، والقديس أثناسيوس كان يدافع عن ألوهية السيد المسيح. فلم يحدث أن قال أريوس للقديس أثناسيوس إن الآيات التى قمت باستخدامها لإثبات ألوهية السيد المسيح ليس لها وجود فى الكتاب المقدس. لكنه كان يحاول إثبات هرطقته بالتحوير فى تفسير الآيات أو يستخدم آيات أخرى يسئ هو فهمها وتفسيرها. ولا زالت الآيات التى استخدمها أريوس موجودة فى العهد الجديد كما هى.
ومن المعروف أن المسيحية قامت ضدها هرطقات منذ القرن الأول الميلادى، ولم يحدث إطلاقاً أن اليهود أو الوثنيين أو الهراطقة اتهموا المسيحيين بتحريف الكتاب المقدس.
إن المسيحيين قد استشهدوا من أجل الإنجيل، وقد دفـعوا الثمن غالياً. فكيف أن شخصاً يحرّف الحقيقة وفى نفس الوقت يضحى بحياته فى سبيل حقيقة محرّفة؟!! فمن جيل إلى جيل لم توجد ديانة فى العالم كله احتملت الاضطهاد وقدمت شهداء مثل المسيحية. منذ فجر المسيحية الأول وإلى ملء التاريخ.

متى حُِرِّف الكتاب المقدس وأين هو الكتاب المقدس غير المحرف؟
"فقال الرب لى أحسنت الرؤية لأنى أنا ساهر على كلمتى لأجريها" (إر1: 12). فهل الله لم يستطع أن يحفظ ولو نسخة واحدة من الكتاب المقدس؟!! إنه يـوجد نسخ من الكتب المقدسة موجودة فى المتاحف، بعضها أجزاء من الكتاب المقدس وبعضها كتب مقدسة كاملة تشمل العهدين القديم والجديد موجودة مثل النسخة الفاتيكانية، والنسخة السينائية، والنسخة الاسكندرية.
فالنسخة الفاتيكانية خطت سنة 328م بأمر الملك قسطنطين، وهى محفوظة الآن فى الفاتيكان وكتبت فى مصر، وتتضمن العهدين القديم والجديد باللغة اليونانية. والنسخة السينائية خطت فى أواخر القرن الرابع الميلادى على رقوق مرهفة من أربعة أعمدة فى الصفحة الواحدة وقد عثر عليها العالِم شندروم فى دير سانت كاترين عند سفح جبل سيناء وهى موجودة الآن فى المتحف البريطانى. والنسخة الاسكندرية خطت فى القرن الخامس الميلادى، وظلت فى حفظ بطاركة الإسكندرية حتى 1828م حيث أهداها البطريرك لوكارس الكريدى (الملكانى) إلى ملك بريطانية شارل الأول وهى الآن محفوظة فى المتحف البريطانى فى إنجلترا.
إلى جانب أنه وُجدت قصاصات متناثرة من الأناجيل فى أماكن متعددة فى العالم موجودة بالمتاحف، ولم يحدث إطلاقاً أن وجدت قصاصة من صفحة من صفحات الإنجيل، ووُجدت مختلفة عن الأناجيل الذى بين أيدينا الآن. مهما كان عمرها، إن رجعت إلى القرن الأول الميلادى أو الثانى أو ما بعد ذلك.. لذلك لا يمكن أن نقبل إطلاقاً إدّعاء تحريف الكتاب المقدس.
أحياناً يرى بعض الأشخاص اختلافات فى الكتاب المقدس بين أجزاء وأجزاء. مثال لذلك إنجيل يوحنا يقول عن المريمات "جاءت مريم المجدلية إلى القبر باكراً والظلام باق" (يو20: 1). وإنجيل آخر هو إنجيل مرقس يقول إنهن "أتين إلى القبر إذ طلعت الشمس" (مر16: 2). لكن فى الحقيقة إن هذا ليس اختلافاً ولكنه سوء فهم من القارئ لأنه عندما يقول "إذ طلعت الشمس" يقصد نور الشمس وليس قرص الشمس. وعند طلوع الشمس من ناحية الشرق يكون الظلام باق من ناحية الغرب. فليس هناك أى تناقض. وأى تناقض يراه القارئ يكون نتيجة عدم فهم وسرعة فى الحكم على الآية.
فـمن الطبيعى أننا نـقرأ الكتـاب المقـدس فى خشــوع، وفى احترام، ونسأل الآباء ومعلمى البيعة ونستشير أقوال وكتابات الآباء القديسين إذا اُغلق علينا فهم أى جزء من أجزاء الكتاب المقدس لأن الكتاب كله هو موحى به من الله "كل نبوة الكتاب ليست من تفسير خاص. لأنه لم تأتِ نبوة قط بمشيئة إنسان، بل تكلم أناس الله القديسون مسوقين من الروح القدس" (2بط1: 20،21).

إنك منذ الطفولية تعرف الكتب المقدسة
يجب أن نعلم أطفالنا ونحفّظهم الكتاب المقدس، فقد قال بولس الرسول لتلميذه تيموثاوس "وإنك منذ الطفولية تعرف الكتب المقدسة القادرة أن تحكّمك للخلاص بالإيمان الذى فى المسيح يسوع" (2تى3: 15) مقصود بعبارة "الكتب المقدسة" هنا العهد القديم لأنه فى وقت طفولية القديس تيموثاوس لم تكن أناجيل العهد الجديد والرسائل قد كُتبت بعد.. فلابد أن نُحفِّظ أطفالنا أكبر كمية ممكنة من الكتب المقدسة وهذه مسئولية خطيرة جداً لأن المثل الشائع يقول إن }التعليم فى الصغر مثل النقش على الحجر{. وإذا قصّرنا فى ذلك فإننا نُقصّر فى حفظ الوديعة.
ففى العصر المسيحى الأول؛ كـان المؤمنـون يحفظون الأسفار المقدسة.. فكانت تُكتب وتُحفظ فى قلـوب وعقــول المؤمنين فى آنٍ واحد. وإنه لشئ جميل جداً أن كلام الله يكون على الورق مكتوباً، وفى القلب محفوظاً. فالكتاب المقدس ليس هو فقط مخطوطات تنسخ ولكنه قديسين يحيوْن بكلام الله. لذلك قال السيد المسيح "الكلام الذى أكلمكم به هو روح وحياة" (يو6: 63).

 

The Origin of Islam:  Islam is a religion revealed in Arabic by the Arabian prophet Muhammad ( 570 - 632 ). It developed in the Arab peninsula in the midst of a population composed of pagans, Jews and Christians.
